The Ugly Duckling favourite cartoons

This tale was adapted to a variety of media. Films based on the tale include two Silly Symphonies animated shorts produced by Walt Disney. The first was produced in 1931 in black and white, and the other in 1939 in technicolor. The latter film won the 1939 Academy Award for Best Cartoons.

The Ugly Duckling

"The Ugly Duckling” or "Den grimme ælling" in danish language, was first published 11 November 1843 by H.C.Andersen in Copenhagen. The story tells of a swan's egg turns up in a duck's nest and how the ducks and the animals in the farm exclude him for being different until he matures into a graceful swan, the most beautiful bird of all.

The Emperor´s New Clothes

"The Emperor´s New Clothes" was first published with "The Little Mermaid" on 7 April 1837 in Copenhagen, Denmark, as the third and final installment of the first collection of Andersen's Fairy Tales for Children.

PLOT: It tells of two swindlers who come to town to persuade the Emperor that they can make clothes which can only be seen by wise people. The Emperor pays more attention to his clothes than to his people, so...

THEMES: The story is about self-confidence, leadership, honesty, pride, peer preassure, hypocrisy and snobbery.

Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) is a Danish author whose enchanting fairy tales are among the most widely read stories in the world. "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Princess and the Pea" are three of his most famous tales.

Hans Christian Andersen had heard the story when he was a child, but not from Danish but Swedish tradition. For Andersen, true nobility derived not from an individual's birth but from their sensitivity and could be a metaphor for the princess depth of feeling and compassion.
